Temat postu: ICGT-2018

Zukole posted above an excellent news - Dmitry Epifanov, the famous Russian renju trainer and player who won the Russian renju championship in 2013 and 2014 as well as the world correspondence renju championship in 2007, organises a large-scale international tournament in correspondence gomoku, adding a new exciting fighting arena to the gomoku world! Dmitry has made a formal tournament announcement on the website of the Renju International Federation, and you can find the link to the announcement in the last line of Zukole's post above. The tournament is meant to be an unofficial world correspondence gomoku championship, is going to be organised annually, and is likely to be officially recognised in the future as the world correspondence gomoku championship by the Renju International Federation.

I would like to tell more about this interesting tournament and correspondence gomoku in general.

So what correspondence gomoku is about?

In short, you play a number of gomoku games in parallel against different opponents, with the time control being a few months, and are allowed to use any programs to analyse positions. Correspondence gomoku is an ideal way to compete for those who have a deep passion to analyse. What decides here is strategic intuition, ability to focus on important branches, systematic thinking, and, most importantly, deep understanding of gomoku.

But really, doesn't it boil down to competition of programs or computers?

It doesn't. After all, the world correspondence renju championship has been organised almost each year since 1982, and it would definitely cease to be a popular competition if all what matters was basically the computer power and choosing the right program. In 2013 and 2014, the winner was Vladimir Sushkov, who also won the live world renju championship in 2009 and 2017. Coincidence? Of course not.

So how does the brain matter?

A perfect illustration comes from a recent specially arranged gomoku game between one of the top gomoku players, Gergő Tóth, and the best gomoku program, Yixin (to be exact, its 2015 version running on an average laptop). The time control was 60+30, and Gergő was allowed only to look at the board and use nothing but his own brain. The game was spectacularly won by Gergő. The program calculated much deeper and wider than Gergo did, but lost because of its poor strategic, positional play. Here is a nice report on the game: https://www.facebook.com/...831350010352214

Thus a pure program will have no chance whatsoever against a gomoku expert equipped with a program. He will use his program merely as a tool to solve local tactical problems and identify moves that are playable from the standpoint of local tactics, while his final choice will be often dictated by global, strategic considerations, which is something programs are notoriously bad at.

Importantly, computer power does not matter much - a two times more powerful computer will generally bring you just one move deeper, for a fixed calculation time, and a difference of one move is a drop in the ocean for correspondence games. Focusing on important branches and making wise strategic decisions are much more important things.

So all you need in order to be competitive at correspondence gomoku is, in addition to gomoku skills themselves, just a standard computer and a program to help you analyse local tactical matters - for example, Yixin, which can be downloaded for free from the developer's website, http://www.aiexp.info/pages/yixin.html

The upcoming tournament will be a very important page of the correspondence gomoku history book, but not the first one.

In particular, in 2013 there was a large-scale correspondence gomoku tournament that involved 20 participants, including many top players. It was called "Gomoku Satellite Tournament," and its time control was 21 day. Although the players were originally supposed not to use programs, it is pretty much safe to say, based on conversations with some participants of that tournament, that a majority of the participants, or at least a considerable part, actually used software to analyse positions, so this tournament can be considered the first large-scale top-level correspondence gomoku competition in the swap2 era. It was really an exciting tournament, and some participants still remember some particularly interesting games from it. Here are its results: http://gomokuworld.com/onlinetournaments/39

Also, a considerable number of people play correspondence gomoku on the websites littlegolem.net and renju.su. For example, here is a currently running tournament involving, in particular, two well-known gomoku players - Anatoly Smirnov (participating under the nickname "anatoliy") and Alexei Lebedev (participating under the nickname "alleb") - as well as Dmitry Epifanov himself (participating under the nickname "Owen"): https://renju.su/en/turnaments/?tur=91&table

And, of course, it is hard not to mention a recent famous correspondence match between Dmitry Epifanov and Anatoly Smirnov, which attracted considerable attention in the Russian gomoku community. Here is a link to a PDF document with an English translation of a part of Dmitry's review of that match: https://goo.gl/8nA6Pv

So far, the main obstacle in the development of correspondence gomoku has been a lack of efforts to organise big competitions, and it is really a great news that now a vice-president of the Renju International Federation, Dmitry Epifanov, comes with such an initiative.

The tournament will be played on renju.su, which is a very convenient website and has an English version. Look how nicely the board and stones look on that website: https://renju.su/en/igrat/game/?id=9243 The link is, by the way, to a game of the aforementioned match between Dmitry Epifanov and Anatoly Smirnov.

The time control will be 135 days. It is quite a comfortable time control that will allow you to analyse from time to time, when it is convenient for you, and will not cause interference with your everyday duties. You will analyse when you feel like enjoying the beauty of gomoku and following your passion to analyse. And the resulting games will be real products of art.

The tournament formula will be round-robin, with everyone playing against everyone two games. Depending on the number of participants, they may be divided to groups. If this happens, the results of each group will be used to form the most prestigious group for the next season, and this makes it important to start participating already this season.

The tournament starts in about two weeks, on Sun 17 Dec 2017, and, as follows from the time control, will take about two thirds of a year.

The registration deadline is Thu 14 Dec 2017.

To register, just get in touch with Dmitry Epifanov via email (renjusignup@yandex.ru), Facebook (fb.com/epifanovd), or Vkontakte (vk.com/epifanovd). He speaks English and Russian. You will need to tell him your full name, citizenship, the country and city you currently live in, and renju.su nickname - you have to register one.

Additionally, since it is a very serious tournament, Dmitry will have to verify that you are who you claim you are, unless it is obvious. This will be generally done in the same way as in the world correspondence renju championship - via a so-called contact person. A contact person is someone from the gomoku or renju community who can vouch for you and is well-known to Dmitry as a very reputable community member. This may sound a bit complicated, but is very easy in practice. Also, there are other options. Just get in touch with Dmitry, and he will talk to you about it. Together you will easily sort it out.

To conclude, if you have a passion for deep analysis and enjoy the beauty of gomoku, this tournament is definitely a must for you. Do not wait - drop a line with your details to Dmitry!

Cytat:
The opening rule is swap2.
The time control is 135 days per player, for each game. After 150 moves a game is declared a draw.
Time per move is 50 days but there is no automatic game ending in this case, winning opponent should contact Referee with a URL of the game where his opponent didn’t make move for more than 50 days.
If player abandons the tournament thereby forfeiting a significant number of games, then he may be disqualified in which case all his games will be considered losses. Decisions about disqualification in the First League, in the Second league and in the Qualification Tournament will be made by Chief Referee, and by Referee Council in the High League.
NB: Dear players, please respect each other and play according to the fair play spirit! If Chief Referee determines that a player has made an unfair action (for example, has resigned or suggested a draw in an absolutely winning position, or has failed to block the opponent’s four) to let his opponent get better tournament result, the Referee can exclude that participant from the tournament and declare all his games lost. In the High League such exclusion also can be made, but by Referee Council instead of Chief Referee.
Any kind of program help is allowed.
